Costigan Chief Mountain Bengals
Today I wanted to blog about a Punnet Square. This is something I have been studing about recently and what my mentor has been teaching me.
A punnet square is a great tool for breeders to use to get a clear idea of what colour's, genetic's, and patterns to expect on the offspring in there breeding.
In order to explain how a punnet square works, and how to use one; I first have to explain a little bit of the genetic colour codes.
In this picture you see at the bottom little codes these code reprezent the colour's. With the Snow Seal Lynx cs/cs code means they are a Snow Seal Lynx. Where C/cs means they carry that colour. For example I have my stud Maserati who is a Brown Bengal, but he is C/cs meaning he carries the colour Seal Lynx.
Same goes with the snow Seal Sepia cb/cb means they are the colour Seal Sepia. Were C/cb means they are a carrier of Seal Sepia. An example of this is our Queen Calypso. She is a Brown Bengal yet she is C/cb a carrier of Seal Sepia. She could have some Snow Seal Sepia baby's.
Now with the Mink colour it is the middle. cb/cs meaning to get the mink colour you need Lynx and Sepia put together. Now that I have explained a little bit about the colour codes I can explain more about the Punnet Square.
On this Punnet Square I am using our Stud Kion & our Queen Vixey as an example.
Kion is a snow Seal Sepia so he is cb/cb.
Vixey is Brown but she is a carrier of snow Seal Sepia so she is C/cb.
On this Punnet Square the thicker lines show Kion colour codes on the top; and Vixey's colour codes on the right hand side. Now as you can see with Kion's cb/cb brake it in half and you only have cb. That is what we have done in the Punnet Square.
Now each of the 4 square's is worth 25% all 4 squares put together makes 100%
So Kion has two genetic's both of them being cb.
Vixey has two genetic's one being C meaning none carrier of Sepia
And Vixey's other genetic being cb meaning Sepia.
So when Kion & Vixey get together and have kittens they are going to each throw one of their genetic codes to the kitten.
In Kion & Vixey's case 50% of their kittens with be Brown but carriers of the snow Seal Sepia colour. Where the other 50% of their kittens will be snow Seal Sepia's.
Not all kittens even if siblings will carry the same colours it just depends on the parents, and what colour code each kittens was given from the parents.
That is a Punnet Square I hope the way I explained it makes sense.
